Most conversations start great and get worse in the same few ways. All of them are fixable, and none of the fixes are complicated.
They agree with everything you say
This is the most common one. Every message gets a yes. Whatever mood you bring, they match it. After a while it feels like talking to a mirror.
The fix is in the character description, not the chat. If nothing in there says they have their own opinions, they will not have any.
- Add an opinion they will argue with you about.
- Add something that annoys them.
- Say directly that they push back when they disagree with you.
They keep saying the same things
Same phrases, same rhythm, same kind of reply every time. Usually this means the conversation has settled into a loop and nothing new is going in.
- Give them something concrete to react to. "Bad day" gives them nothing. The specific annoying thing that happened gives them something to grab.
- Change the situation. Move the conversation somewhere else, or bring up something unrelated.
- Tell them directly that they are repeating themselves. It genuinely helps, because now it is part of the conversation.
- Ask them things that need more than a yes or no.
They forget things you told them
Long conversations have a limit. Older messages gradually get squeezed out to make room for new ones. The stuff most likely to vanish is something you mentioned once, a while ago, and never brought up again.
So the things that stick are the things that get repeated or written down properly.
- Put anything permanent in the character description. That part never gets forgotten.
- Mention important things more than once. Repetition is what makes something stick.
- Say things plainly instead of hinting. Clear statements survive, implications do not.
- Expect the middle of a long conversation to fade. That is normal, not a fault.
They remember things that never happened
This one catches people off guard. You mention an earlier conversation and they confidently add details that were never there.
They are not lying. When the details are gone, they fill the gap with something that sounds like it fits. From their side there is no difference between remembering and guessing.
Just correct it plainly and move on. A clear correction sticks better than the thing it replaced, because it is now the most recent thing said.
Things that help across the board
- Be specific. Details give them something to work with. Summaries do not.
- Leave openings. Questions get better replies than statements.
- Say when something felt generic. It really does change the next reply.
- Let some conversations be ordinary. If everything is intense all the time, none of it lands.
Nearly all of this comes back to the character description. If the conversation keeps going wrong in the same way, that is usually where to fix it rather than in the chat itself.
